Monday April 26, 2010: Rainy Days and Mondays…

…and today is a rainy Monday.  At the moment, before the coffee has worked its magic, I just want to crawl back into bed and go back to sleep.  But since I start my new fulltime job for Magnum Broadcasting today, and have to be in a sales meeting at 9, that won’t be possible.

I drove a cab for a total of 16 hours over the  Penn State Blue-White weekend, and then we did our first read-through of Twelve Angry Men yesterday.  It was a very full weekend.

Although I was well aware of the drunken carnival our special events weekends always become here in State College, seeing it all up close from the taxi driver’s seat is a little alarming.  I picked up a total of 4 students at the emergency room, who had drunk so much the night before they had to be transported to the hospital for observation.  And then there was the lovely student from Nigeria who, I suspect, had been slipped a date rape drug.  She was frightened, and missing her shoes and cell phone.  She took great pains to explain to me that she really does not drink much, and that she couldn’t figure out why she could not remember 3 hours of her life at all.  I believe her.

I had drunken students in my cab as early as 9 AM on Saturday.  I wonder how they got through the rest of the weekend.

Sunday was our first Angry Men read-through, and what a strong cast our director Val has assembled! This is going to be a very good show — so if you’re in town, and want to attend, get your tickets quickly.  It’s a little scary, though — we open on May 18th.  And that’s just a few weeks away.  And there’s a LOT of fast-paced, intense dialogue to memorize.   Interested?  Just contact State College Community Theatre for dates, times and tickets.

Today’s Curiosities

Well, curiously enough, there aren’t any today.  No time… but I’ll try to put together a few extras tomorrow.

Have a great day!  –Steve

  1. All I gotta say is that I am really glad my girls are finished with college. I know this sort of thing goes on, but I never witnessed it up close and personal (thank goodness).

There are all the spring break stories, usually involving balconies, but I felt like it was just a brief weeklong crazy time for college kids–guess I was wrong about that.

  2. It wasn’t full time until today — it’s half sales, and half doing my show. I’m really hoping the streaming will start soon. I think, with any luck, it’ll be within the next couple of weeks. And I’m working on something else for wider distribution — can’t talk about it quite yet, but I’m hoping.

  3. Steve, have you done well in sales in previous venues? Those might be blog topics in and of themselves… I put in 20 years in advertising sales, & have lots of stories… ok, so it’s time for me to start a blog too…
